A psychoanalytic view of cross-cultural passages
Article Abstract:
Cultural relocation initiates a process of psychological development as the person constructs a new identity incorporating aspects of the original and adopted cultures. The adaptation will be affected by the person's individual character, native culture and new culture, including the degree of difference between cultures. Two case studies illustrate stages of cultural transformation and the role of the analyst at each stage. The first case involved distinguishing cultural traits from internal conflicts; the second involved issues of shame and anger arising from cultural prejudice.

The working analyst and the analytic work
Article Abstract:
Normal Kelman and Saul Tuttman both believe analysts should facilitate the analytic process but while Kelman emphasizes the analysts' unimportance, Tuttman believes they should have personal pathologies to generate empathy. Kelman also emphasizes the importance of addressing the patient's pain and suffering rather than abstracting the feelings into problems of enigmas. Both support an emotional rather than intellectual approach to psychoanalysis.
