A psychological perspective on the development of caring in children and youth: the role of the family
Article Abstract:
The construct of caring is analyzed with particular focus on how it is engendered in children and adolescents by their families. The study investigates the development of psychological components of caring during infancy and early and middle childhood to identify the forerunners of this behavior in adolescence. Caring in teenagers is examined by assessing the impact of gender differences, parenting styles and caring on adolescent well-being. The risk and protective issues associated with the development of this behavior are also studied.

The association between weapon-carrying and the use of violence among adolescents living in or around public housing
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to examine the relationship between weapon-carrying and violent behavior among Black adolescents living in poor and high-crime-rate neighborhoods. Two hundred twenty-five teenagers between the ages of 11 and 19 living in or around public housing projects in Augusta, GA, are surveyed. The results suggest that the frequency of weapon-carrying is related to such factors as previous exposure to violence and victimization, higher family conflict, higher depression, older age, and more severe physical punishment.
