An evaluation of the Relationship Enhancement Program with prisoners and their wives
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the Relationship Enhancement (RE) Program with Jewish prisoners and their wives has been made. This marital enrichment intervention had positive outcomes for married couples in which the husband was incarcerated at a federal prison camp. Limited contact is permitted for married couples. When one spouse is incarcerated, marital problems already severe, become exacerbated. The RE Program seeks to improve and strengthen interpersonal relationships through skill training. Among skills taught are those related to empathy, expression, self-change and maintenance.

Incarceration and learned helplessness
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine whether incarceration for a long period of time results in increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Researchers have found that incarceration does not result in intellectual deterioration. Individuals who have been incarcerated for 6 years or more have fewer complaints, higher self-esteem, and lower anxiety and depression. Other research suggests that helplessness is a learned behavior, which may originate from childhood events.
