Binge eating and substance use among male and female adolescents
Article Abstract:
Current binge eaters are more likely than non-binge eaters to use a wide range of substances, according to data derived from the 1997 Ontario Student Drug Use Survey of public and Catholic school students. There are particularly strong links between binge eating and the use of cannabis and drugs other than tobacco and alcohol. It was also found that compensator behaviour is connected with more widespread use of these other drugs. Binge eaters tend to have poor body image and lowered self-esteem, and many suffer from depression.

Childhood sexual abuse
Article Abstract:
The accuracy of retrospective reports of adult childhood sexual abuse victims are studied. Results show differences in recall and reporting among men and women. About 16% of men who are known victims of childhood sexual abuse considered their past experiences as sexual abuse compared to 64% of women. More women with histories of childhood sexual abuse also report their experiences as young adults compared to women with experiences of physical abuse or neglect.

Temperament and IQ mediate the effects of family history of substance abuse and family dysfunction on academic achievement
Article Abstract:
A study of 57 sons of substance-abusing fathers and 71 normal controls revealed the negative impacts on positive affective temperament and intellectual ability in the former sample, as a consequence of parental substance abuse. Sons of substance-abusing fathers suffered poor reading achievement scores, which proved a crucial factor in their subsequent failure in school.
