Cognitive effects of corticosteroids
Article Abstract:
Patients with abnormally high blood levels of corticosteroids have been shown to exhibit symptoms of cognitive impairment. For example, patients who have been treated with corticosteroids for specific medical conditions have developed side effects, which include difficulty in concentrating, memory deficits, and diminished attention spans. Previous studies investigating the association between cognitive performance and corticosteroid levels have been marred by design flaws and the use of subjects with existing psychiatric or physical disease. In this article, the results of three independent experiments examining the relationship between corticosteroids and cognitive changes are reported. Different experimental designs were used, along with different subjects. The three studies included one study with depressed patients, while the other two used healthy volunteers. The subjects were given dexamethasone or prednisone (commonly used therapeutic corticosteroids), or placebos. The results of all three studies suggested that there is a relationship between cognition and corticosteroids. When tested for cognitive function levels, all subjects made significantly more errors in verbal memory tasks while they were taking corticosteroids. No significant changes were noted in the rate of omission errors in association with the drugs. This supports previous research linking corticosteroids and cognitive impairment, and also suggests that corticosteroids are associated with specific cognitive impairments. Narrative and psychological understanding
Article Abstract:
Hermeneutically based texts are reviewed in a hermeneutic context. Philosophical hermeneutics involves the interpretation of texts which are themselves about texts, resulting in layers of interpretations. These interpretations also involve the absence of neutral or objective standpoints, making them subject to the social, cultural and professional prejudices of the reviewer.
