Freud, three operas, and the affair with Minna Bernays: a reply to O'Brien's interpretation of operatic allusions
Article Abstract:
Michael T. O'Brien cites allusions to three operas in support of his analysis of Freud's alleged affair with Minna Bernays. However, in his discussion of 'Don Giovanni,' O'Brien omits aspects of the context which suggest an allusion to Freud's anxiety over his appointment as professor extraordinarius rather than an extramarital affair. Furthermore, in his presentation of references to 'Carmen' and 'The Marriage of Figaro,' O'Brien relies on an undated letter which he states was written soon after Minna Bernays moved into Freud's home, but could as well have been written before then.

Parapraxes in song recall: a neglected variable
Article Abstract:
Parapraxes produced in music and lyrics by polyglot members of treatment dyads illustrate Freud's theory of the unconscious significance of slips. Parapraxes in song recall indicate unconscious transference-countertransference states. Two empirical studies focused on the relationship between therapist and patient songs and paid attention to patients' affective states, dynamic conflicts, and transference reactions. Types of slips include mismatched music or lyrics, slips in concomitant associations and polyglot slips related to translation.

Ferenczi's 'A Little Chanticleer': a child's favorite song recall
Article Abstract:
A case study cited by psychoanalyst Sandor Ferenczi in 'A Little Chanticleer' was analyzed by Sigmund Freud as evidence of his Oedipus complex theory. A slightly different interpretation of a child's memory for poultry-based songs and his obsession with chickens is presented.
