Kant and empirical psychology in the 18th century
Article Abstract:
Philosopher Immanuel Kant's lectures on anthropology from 1772 until his retirement in 1796 were compiled in a book entitled 'Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View.' His lectures focused on the various aspects of human behavior and cognition and provided insights into his thoughts on empirical psychology as well as the state of empirical psychology during his time. Some of the topics covered in his lectures ranged from self-consciousness and self-observation to cognitive facility, moral perception, feelings of pleasure and pain, unnoticed ideas and sensation.

Mechanisms of placebo pain reduction: an empirical investigation
Article Abstract:
Mechanisms, such as anxiety reduction or release of endogenous opioids, fail to mediate the reduction in the experimental pain produced by placebo administered in the guise of topical anesthetics. Placebo is applied to one of the right and left index fingers and then pain stimuli are administered. Half of the subjects exhibit simultaneous stimulation in both fingers, and in the other half stimulation of pain is sequential. Pain reduction was substantial and equal in both the cases.

Interaction of the dopaminergic system with mechanisms of associative learning and cognition: implications for drug abuse
Article Abstract:
The possible function of mechanisms of associative learning in drug abuse and addition was analyzed against psychomotor stimulant drugs. Parallel mechanisms by which stimulant drugs influence the effects of aversive and rewarding stimuli were examined. Critical neuromodulatory influences were then determined. These include the amygdala that mediates the associative procedures by which environmental stimuli come to control drug-seeking behavior.
