On the uses of history in psychiatry: Diagnostic implications for anorexia nervosa
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to demonstrate that recent attempts to equate anorexia nervosa with any form of voluntary self-starvation are not justified. The results suggest that a critical approach of eating disorders by interpreting historical sources makes the emergence of anorexia with weight phobia in the middle of the 19th century probable, however, the etiologic implications of the historical specificity of anorexia nervosa are limited.

Short-term outcome of psychiatric inpatients with anorexia nervosa in the current care environment
Article Abstract:
The short-term outcome of 61 inpatients with anorexia nervosa is described, utilizing a standardized protocol that could be completed by most patients within the typical length of stay in an academic medical center in the geographic area. Attainable inpatient treatment goals appear to be greater than or equal to 80% ideal body weight (IBW) at discharge, resolution of acute medical problems, and interruption of compensatory behaviors.
