Regeneration in the CNS: optimism mounts
Article Abstract:
Several studies have been made indicating axon regeneration in the central nervous systems (CNS) of adults producing the possibility that a treatment may be developed that will improve patients with neurological deficits. Findings have enabled researchers to find solutions to questions such as the inhibitory nature of CNS tissue, structures and molecules making the injured CNS inhibitory, stimulation of axonal growth and steps to follow in repairing the CNS.

Enlightening the path of axons
Article Abstract:
Scientists have accomplished much in the study of axon guidance, the process by which neurons are able to connect to each other via their axons. More than a hundred years ago, Ramon y Cajal broke ground with his study of Purkinje-cell development. His findings set the pace for further studies in axon guidance. Current research indicates that both attractive and negative cues play major roles in axon guidance.

Neurones from stem cells?
Article Abstract:
The use of 'embryonic stem cells cultured as aggregates' offers a new path for studying the development of a precursor cell into mature neurons in the mammalian central nervous system. The approach, however, remains in the developmental stage because the definition of CNS stem cells remain unclear with respect to their proliferative ability and potential for in vitro differentiation.
