Are being unemployed and being out of the labor force distinct states?: A psychological approach
Article Abstract:
The question of whether joblessness results in feelings of helplessness among individuals was investigated by studying data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth on 12,686 individuals both male and female between 14 and 22 years old in 1979. A previous study by Clark and Summer postulates that there is no significant difference between being classified as out of the labor force and unemployed. It was concluded that joblessness does result in helplessness and that prolonged unemployment will increase the feeling of helplessness.

The impact of labor force history on self-esteem and its component parts, anxiety, alienation and depression
Article Abstract:
Joblessness affects self-esteem and may lead to feelings of anxiety, a sense of alienation and depression. New psychological tests that measure emotional health and well-being have been used to estimate the correlation between joblessness and self-esteem. These address the previously disregarded biases, such as omitted variables, heterogeneity and data selection. Decompositional analysis was used in analyzing data on depression due to joblessness from the US National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Results show that mental health and well-being are affected by unemployment.
