What does nonword repetition measure? A reply to Gathercole and Baddeley
Article Abstract:
Research finds no support for claims by Alan D. Baddeley and Susan E. Gathercole that there is a direct link between receptive vocabulary and phonological memory in five-year-old children. The results of experiments by J.A. Bowey that suggest their theory is inconclusive should be interpreted conservatively, however. Baddeley and Gathercole claim Bowey's findings are undermined because a nonstandard nonword repetition procedure was used in the research, but the procedure was only slightly altered to make it more appealing to young children.

Further evidence that orthographic rime usage in nonword reading increases with word-level reading proficiency
Article Abstract:
Children's use of orthographic rime in the phonological recoding process increases with word-level reading proficiency. Improvements in nonword reading accuracy from second to fourth grade are associated with increases in the use of orthographic rimes. Children between fourth and sixth grade show a lack of use of orthographic rimes and a lack in increase in nonword reading accuracy. Second grade children with high word identification ability are more likely to use orthographic rimes than those with low word identification ability.

The limitations of orthographic rime analogies in beginners' word reading: A replay to Goswami (1999)
Article Abstract:
Goswami has argued that the findings of Bowey, Vaughan and Hansen cannot be interpreted. Each of the criticisms of the methodology are addressed and none explain the differential analogy and phonological priming effects reported, nor the finding that the size of the end analogy effect is not greater than that of beginning and medial vowel analogy effects. Additionally Goswami's criticisms place doubt on the findings of here version of the clue word task.
