Harold I. Eist, 125th pres. of the American Psychiatric Assn., (APA) believes that diversity in the organization becomes organizational strength through peaceful relations. He encourages the members to unite for public good, to value sanctity of life instead of money and to work toward nondiscrimination and equal treatment of the mentally ill. He also presented five concerns the APA should focus on: managed care, ethics, confidentiality, strategic alliances and relationship with medical specialties, particularly the American Medical Assn.

Presidential address; strengthening psychiatry's dedication and commitment to compassionate care, educational excellence, and creative research
Article Abstract:
The 125th Pres of the American Psychiatric Assn (APA) Harold I. Eist felt that he was one of the most criticized, if not the most criticized, presidents of the association for his bold efforts to fight for the high quality of psychiatric care. Eist commended the APA for being the leader in advocating for patients' welfare. However, he warned of managed care as a monster that threatens to destroy American health care industry.
