Changing with the times
Article Abstract:
The Creative Services Department (CSD) of the Los Angeles Times newspaper uses graphics software tools on Macintosh microcomputers to produce better advertisements at a lower cost. The CSD is basically an in-house ad agency that works with clients through regional sales-offices to create ad copy and layouts. The operation found the Macs to be useful tools for producing ads from initial layout to final art and involved prepress personnel in composition of the printed pages. The Macs at the regional offices are linked to Sun SPARCstation fileservers at the headquarters and to printing plants by the Times' T1 wide-area network. Software used to produce the ads include Aldus FreeHand, Adobe PhotoShop, Multi-Ad Services's Multi-Ad Creator, Adobe Type Library and Broderbund's TypeStyler. Times Publishing Systems Dept system development services manager Jim Robertson discusses the evolution and outlook for publishing systems at the Times.

More on licensing designers
Article Abstract:
Most of the response to a previous column recommending establishment of some form of certification for graphic designers was negative. Most people believe that a designer's portfolio and reputation are the only things that need to be considered when hiring, but others recognize that professional designers need a way to distinguish themselves and to show their commitment to ongoing education. It is impossible to measure a graphic design's artistic value objectively, and regulation would relate more to business ethics and technical skill. The Canadian province of Ontario has enacted a law creating the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario that grants its members exclusive rights to the title Registered Graphic Designer. The association is intended to establish, promote and regulate uniform standards for graphic design and to promote the benefits of graphic design to the public.
