Article Abstract:
Selection of an interactive multimedia authoring program requires an assessment of user requirements such as ease and frequency of use, time needed to learn the software, media to be supported, development capabilities required, interface capabilities, intended audience, target equipment and stability of the vendor. Authoring systems can be excellent tools for creating such applications as marketing presentations, interactive training and public information kiosks. The wide range of commercial authoring packages varies from easy-to-use products priced less than $100 to highly complex packages that cost thousands of dollars. Simpler, non-authoring system multimedia products such as Claris' HyperCard and Asymetrix's Multimedia ToolBook for Windows or data base management systems or presentation packages with procedural languages or robust macro features may be sufficient for experimentation or simple projects. Some capabilities of several authoring programs are very briefly discussed.
