Big brother, the grocery clerk
Article Abstract:
Information technologies are now sophisticated and subtle enough to infiltrate our daily lives without public recognition. Information from a variety of sources can be obtained, transferred and reorganized into marketing information systems to be used by potential solicitors. Bar codes, credit cards, Social Security numbers and other numeric identification systems are accessed for credit transactions or for proof of identity. These numbers can be processed to reveal patterns in spending habits or financial background which can later provide detailed data about consumers. The application of integrated services digital network (ISDN) and fiber optics also enables the transmission of personal information to third parties. Lotus Development Corp considered releasing Marketplace, a CD-ROM data base product containing information about over 120 million people, but withdrew it in response to concerns about privacy. The Code of Fair Information is one document that outlines privacy rights in the age of computer technologies.

Getting what you see?
Article Abstract:
Visions of future technologies are important on a global scale, so that industries worldwide can begin today to work toward common goals. Having a strong vision of the future is advantageous so that the vision can be amplified. The Japanese vision of future technologies involves the Hypernetwork. Hypernetwork is a slogan that gives impetus to forming a consensus in technological/industrial/governmental planning processes toward formation of a common goal. Interactive three-dimensional video, very high-bandwidth communication channels, virtual reality as a communication medium, shape-recognition cameras, and TeamWorkStations may be part of a future that ties multimedia tools to the human visual system. Future trends for the year 2010 include desktop mind-amplifiers, full-motion video, 3-D telepresence, and computer-mediated high-bandwidth global telecommunications; these media may converge.

Life in a virtual community
Article Abstract:
Microcomputer users who want to find a way to communicate with other users can use numerous on-line services including electronic mail systems, electronic bulletin boards and conference systems. These services require users to have a microcomputer, telephone line and a modem. Electronic mail systems enable users to send and receive mail electronically. Access to the system is controlled via passwords. Electronic bulletin boards are generally free or inexpensive, and they provide a way for users to engage in conversations or post messages. A conferencing system is much like a bulletin board, but enables users in different locations and at different times to participate in on-going debates or conversations with groups of other users.
