Style and spelling checkers: they're only human
Article Abstract:
On-line style and spelling checkers plus disk-based thesauruses can be unreliable. Desk reference books are usually more reliable, especially when decisions must be made to accept or reject software suggestions. Some problems that occur when using style and spelling checkers or thesauruses include: using the passive, rather than the active, voice; and confusion related to homophones (words that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings) and homonyms (words that are spelled alike but have different meanings). Moreover, when typos represent correctly spelled words (such as "end" for "and"), the software cannot detect the error.
