Books, reading and book usage in the European Union
Article Abstract:
The patterns of book consumption in countries of the European Union (EU) are evaluated and compared based on the concept of per capita book usage, which is the sum of per head library loans and per head purchased book copies in a particular year, in relation to data about non-readers and voracious readers in each country. The similarities and differences in the patterns are due to the percentage of secondary and tertiary educated population, state policies on libraries and education, and overall deployment of information in a given country.
