Common Ground 2.01
Article Abstract:
Common Ground Software's $189 Common Ground 2.01 attempts to give users some advantages over Adobe Acrobat, but its similar feature set does not operate as well as Adobe's. The program operates by emulating a printer driver, Common Ground Maker, which allows users to choose to create a file based on the information an application supplies to the screen, or one that includes renditions of PostScript elements. The program typically operates slowly, and Common Ground Maker operates in the foreground tying up users' computers. The software is bundled with PS Converter, a stand-alone program that converts PostScript disk files into Digital Paper (DP) portable format. The chief improvements of the 2.01 version are the elimination of a number of bugs that infested the 2.0 version, although some still persist. The program has added features for World Wide Web publishers, such as a DP file capable of using URLs hyperlinks, and a Netscape Navigator helper tool.

The ins and outs of h&j
Article Abstract:
Hyphenation and justification is the process used by software to fit letters into specified line lengths, but the available desktop publishing programs are not capable of providing professional results. Pagemaker is the only program that allows users to specify minimum and maximum values for word spacing and letter spacing, although it's default values are sloppy. Ventura provides the same controls for word spacing, but only allows one specified value for letter spacing, while Quark Xpress allows maximum values to be specified and ReadySetGo offers no controls. ReadySetGo, Xpress and Ventura provide tracking control, which is necessary to control the overall spacing of selected text. ReadySetGo contains the most complete set of hyphenation tools, yet it has problems in limiting consecutive hyphens.

How to choose a Mac page layout program
Article Abstract:
Choosing among Macintosh page layout programs such as Aldus PageMaker, Letraset USA's ReadySetGo and QuarkXPress is an individual decision based upon user needs. Considerations include graphics, PC compatibility, color, type of document, length of document, text, typography, camera-ready output, frequency of publication, consistency, precision versus flexibility, experience and independence. Aldus Pagemaker's Mac version lists for $595, its PC version for $795. QuarkXPress lists for $795 as well. ReadySetGo lists for $495. Other page layout programs soon to be available include Letraset's new DesignStudio for $795, Timeworks's Publish It for $395 and Xerox's Macintosh version of Xerox Ventura Publisher. No price is currently available for the latter.
