Create high-quality stills from video
Article Abstract:
A guide to creating high-quality still images from digital video is presented. Basic supplies include a standard camcorder, a tripod, a computer with a VGA-resolution video capture board and recording software such as Adobe Premiere. Users will need to capture at least 10 identical frames from at least five minutes of video footage for best results. Many recording programs can 'clone' frames to fill in gaps. Step-by-step instructions for creating mathematical frame merges in Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photo-Paint 7.0 are presented. Photoshop's Move tool can build the frames into a single composition, and the user then changes the Opacity settings for the individual layers incrementally. Photo-Paint 7 works best when the raw video frames are in a format other than PICT and has a Paste From File command for adding each frame as a separate object. Users change object translucity via an option box accessible from the Objects palette.

Logos from letters: words into pictures with Illustrator or Corel Draw
Article Abstract:
Drawing programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw can be used to create a logo with one important advantage over use of pen and ink by skilled craftsmen: redrawing the logo to get it just right is much easier on a computer. How to use a drawing program to create a logo on a Macintosh running Illustrator is described using a logo for a woodworking company as an example. The Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is useful for anyone working with fonts from the Adobe Type Library because it is easy to trace characters. The screen font for the typeface to be edited must be loaded into the System, two text blocks are created in Illustrator for the capital letters being customized, a new Illustrator file is opened and the screen shot created is selected as a template, and the rest of the text in the logo is added as a reference. The other five steps in the process are described.

Article Abstract:
Caligari Corp's $795 TrueSpace 2.0 is a Windows-based 3D package that is the best option available for less than $1500. Despite being difficult to learn, TrueSpace 2.0 is easier to use and faster with a variety of modeling, animation and rendering than most other packages. Combines with a Pentium system, this product affords an excellent modeler for 3D professionals and novices alike. The package's rendering and animation are not up to the professional standards of more costly products, but they are within a reasonable proximity.
