In 1985, Australian Consolidated Press's Brian Anderson updated their mostly manual editorial and production processes, keeping in mind that the aim was to make money, not prove that everything could be done electronically. He decided early on only to use technology for tasks for which clear savings could be seen. To build the system, 350 networked PCs were bought, both 286- and 386-based, and off-the-shelve software, Xerox's Ventura Publisher for layout and Xyquest's Xywrite Plus for test processing. ACP now has the freedom to use new versions of the products, or new applications. An ACP subsidiary, Contex Systems, is set up to service, support and sell networked PC-based publishing systems. ACP's PC network publishing system is one of the world's largest.

6th annual design awards

Article Abstract:

The winning entries in Publish magazine's Sixth Annual Design Contest illustrate the extent and diversity of computer aided graphic design capabilities and creative results. More than 700 entries were made in a total of 13 categories: newsletter, catalog, book, interactive multimedia, annual report, advertisement, newspaper, magazine, brochure, poster, self-promotion, technical, infographic, letterhead, illustration, packaging and student. The hardware, software and techniques used to create the winning designs in each category and the top three designs are described.
