Doc It 4000
Article Abstract:
The $4,999 Doc It 4000 from Okidata combines a laser printer, scanner, fax and copier machine in one desktop unit, but the potential user would probably be better off buying separate devices with equal or superior features for the same price. The 400-dots-per-inch (dpi) printing, facsimile and copying capabilities of the machine are good, but the scanner cannot produce images adequate for high-quality printing. The 8 pages per minute laser printing component features HP PCL4 and PCL5 emulations, with PostScript an option, and produces solid blocks and good greys. The fax component can send and receive faxes on plain paper and also sends electronic documents directly like a fax modem, though no modem-based data communications capabilities are available. The scanning component supports 200-, 300- and 400-dpi resolutions and includes several image manipulation capabilities but is limited to 64 levels of grey. Doc It 4000 is best suited to small offices with limited space and greater need for speed than image quality.

Schizophrenic color shifts
Article Abstract:
Electronics for Imaging Inc's Eficolor color management system ensures predictable color output from the same files to all types of printers. EfiColor best fits the needs of one publishing firm because it supports Adobe PhotoShop 2.5, will support Quark XPress 3.2, handles the entire pre-press process, and provides necessary device profiles such as Specifications for Web-Offset Publications. The Installer program places EfiColor in the company's System Folder, analyzes any pre-existing compatible files and fills in spaces. Screens can be calibrated with a Radius Color Calibrator. When using EfiColor, designers must remember to work in RGB color space until final proof and output, which is done in CYMK color space , and be careful with color adjustments on EPS, which sends files directly to the output printer.
