Enhanced character recognition
Article Abstract:
Hewlett Packard Co's HP ScanJet IIc color flatbed scanner combined with Caere Corp's OmniPage Professional 2.0 comprises a high-powered optical character recognition (OCR) system. As a low-cost color scanner, the ScanJet IIc is priced at $2,195 for the IBM PC compatible version and $1,995 for the Apple Macintosh version. The scanner's DeskScan II software is its best feature, offering color for office publishing outside the design industry. An easy-to-use color wheel helps novice users select the color they want without color theory knowledge. The ScanJet IIc is bundled with Zedcor's DeskPaint for the Mac version and ZSoft's Paintbrush for the IBM PC version. Other software packages offer more powerful photo editing features but but the quality of the images produced is excellent. OmniPage Pro's hardware requirements demand a lot of RAM and disk space, but the program is powerful and easy to use once installed. Utilizing the AccuPage driver, OmniPage Pro is fast, accurate, and works with a variety of scanners in addition to saving text in several different word processing formats.

Drowning in art
Article Abstract:
Clip art has been increasingly available since the onset of 1996. Three clip art collection CD packages released in one month cumulatively deliver hundreds of thousands of images. There is assuredly enough clip art in the world to suit any occasion or task. The abundance of images packaged in one CD collection seems to come at the sacrifice of quality. They are worth having, however, for their variety of images and low price, usually between $50 and $75 per collection. The success of high-quality clip art packages should not be jeopardized by the size and lower quality of large CD collections. The proliferation of clip art currently on the market actually forces publications to hire illustrators to make their publications stand out more.

In search of the lost code
Article Abstract:
PC Search and Replace 2.0 ($34.95) and Blueberry Series 2 1.11 ($200) are new programs for preparing word-processed manuscript for code-based typesetting, letting a user replace codes for paragraphs, italics, and so on, in a single operation. PC Search and Replace, which is not copy protected, requires 128Kbytes, DOS 2.0 or later, and one disk drive; Blueberry Series 2, also not copy protected, requires 128Kbytes, DOS 2.0 or later, and two disk drives (a hard drive is recommended). Both programs are called 'satisfactory'; paying for the higher priced product saves dealing with learning about things such as hexadecimal codes.
