New faces of '90
Article Abstract:
Designers are implementing new ideas in typeface design due to the evolving computer font technology. Monotype Typography Inc's Ellington typeface is a daring, modern typeface evoking the spirit of Duke Ellington. The Ellington x-height is large and the set is narrow. The vertical strokes are thick, with thin horizontals making it a good choice for short headlines used in advertising. Adobe System Inc's Trajan is based on the chiseled lettering found on Trajan's column in Rome. The Charlemagne capitals that are sold with Trajan are influenced by early manuscript lettering. Their ornamental nature makes them appropriate for use as initial letters and they set a quiet, decorative tone. The most unusual new font is Old Dreadful No. 7 from Bitstream Inc which offers the drawing of letters as pictures. This typeface works well when used as a decorative capital. Other typefaces are described.

Not for primers only: the Century family - truly an American classic
Article Abstract:
The Century typeface family has strong American roots. Century Schoolbook was used in many school primers. Mixing Century Schoolbook with other Century faces helps make the font more visually interesting. Century Schoolbook was possibly the first font for which the main purpose was to ensure legibility. This legibility makes it well-suited for 300-dot-per-inch printing. The font is commonly used in insurance and banking materials as well as diners and used car businesses to put across a down-home image of honesty and caring. Three good software packages which carry the Century font are available, including Adobe Type Library from Adobe Systems Inc, Bitstream Typeface Library from Bitstream Inc and Monotype Typeface Library from Monotype Typography Inc.

Introducing Charter
Article Abstract:
Bitstream's Charter typeface is designed to meet the demands of typography within the limits of desktop publishing. The font does not have any shallow curves, hairline strokes, nor any sharp contrasts between strokes. These avoidances make for clean, crisp strokes that stand up well under laser printing. Letters like 'b' and 'd' appear to have their inside shapes carved out, and the joining lines are fitted meticulously to ensure clear print. Charter's large, open letters combined with square serifs allow for flexibility in style without losing the typed-page look. It is well suited for business applications and offers high readability and versatility.
