Old paint
Article Abstract:
Claris Corp's Macpaint 2.0 is an upgrade that stays close to the original's look and feel, with a 72-dpi resolution, and offers a number of enhancements, but ultimately does not provide the value of other graphic programs. The $125 program offers scrolling, magnification, and multi-document capabilities, and requires 512Kbytes (1Mbyte for some features), and two disk drives. The program's undo capabilities have been expanded, but it does not support color, gray-scale rendering, or pages larger than 8 by 10 inches. Most users should look instead at programs that offer greater graphic precision and take advantage of high-resolution printers and typesetters. Users who are looking for 72-dpi graphics should consider the less-expensive Ann Arbor Softwork's Fullpaint, or Silicon Beach's Superpaint, which offers more features. This program is recommended for Macpaint users who want to pay $25 for the upgrade.

A fine art: Persuasion
Article Abstract:
Persuasion, from Aldus Corp, is a top notch $495 computer graphics program designed for use on the Macintosh Plus, Mac SE or Mac II. The software requires 1Mbyte RAM and a hard disk. Persuasion is easy to use and makes it easy to set up presentations. Some color combinations cause banding; Aldus is working on the situation. Full page handouts or thumbnail versions of slides can be printed using the program. There is a palette of 200 colors, which is not as extensive as some other Mac slide programs. A series of slides can be created by typing text into an outline. Changes made to the outline text are reflected in the slides, and changes in the slides are reflected in the outline text.

Not the silent type
Article Abstract:
Broderbund Software's $59.95 Postermaker Plus is a typeface manipulation and graphics program for the Mac that produces poster-size print outs. The only fonts which are modifiable are the five Smooth Fonts that come with the program. Others can be downloaded to it but they cannot be edited. Banners and signboard graphics are included and users may create their own as well. PICT files can be imported from other graphics programs. The low price and ability to modify type into any shape makes this a worthwhile program for a desktop publishing software library.
