Report Styler 1.0
Article Abstract:
Report Styler 1.0, from Alpha Software, is a report formatting and design program that offers speed advantages over other layout programs such as Aldus PageMaker and QuarkExpress. Similar entries in the report data base are automatically formatted in the same manner after style names are assigned to each element, such as heading, subheading or detail line. The spreadsheet, accounting, E-mail or mainframe program can be imported; a style is then selected by clicking in the Styles box. Typeface, size and position are assigned in the Style view mode where columns are created and graphics are added. The choices made in these modes are automatically added to the rest of the report. Windows Metafile and BMP format graphics can also be attached to text. Report Styler requires an 80286-based microcomputer with 2Mbytes RAM, MS Windows 3.0 and 2Mbytes free hard disk space.

Typographer's treat
Article Abstract:
Laser Friendly's $995 Office Publisher is a software package for the PC suited to professional typographers and designers. Included are myriad typographical and graphics capabilities and menu options. Creating forms is efficient and there is interactive design of single pages and batch pagination of larger documents. There are four editor modules: layout, style, text, and retouch. Perhaps the most valuable function in the layout editor is the ability to position frames to hold page elements. On the down side, Laser Friendly needs to fix the screen font and clean up the menu display. An IBM PC or compatible with 640K and a 10 MB hard disk is needed.

Pages according to plan
Article Abstract:
Harvard Professional Publisher ($695), from Software Publishing Corp, is a new page-makeup software package said to be especially suited to globally formatting documents with consistent designs, such as reports, manuals, or books. Harvard is compared to Xerox's Ventura Publisher and Aldus's PageMaker, and found to be more like Ventura with its emphasis on preplanning a design. Two advantages of Professional Publisher are ease-of-use and good typography.
