Serves you right
Article Abstract:
Users planning on exploiting the marketing potentials of the World Wide Web with a Web page should familiarize themselves with the hardware, software, platforms, vendors, costs and services available. Users should enquire about product specs, costs, warranty information and service contracts, additional services provided and online services' rates. A Web Page needs to reside on a server, allowing users to access the Web's resources, and browsers must access the information being disseminated. Compatible serrvers include any PC- or Apple-based system or any Unix system. Although Unix systems are complex, some vendors offer user-friendly software and hardware bundles which may facilitate their use. Unix servers can range from $5,500 for a low-end Sun Netra Internet server to $100,000 for Silicon Graphics' high-end WebForce bundle with 16GB of RAM and 6.4TB of disk space. However, for small sites a $2,000, 486 system with 16MB of RAM and 1GB of disk space may be sufficient.

Prepress U; what you need to know and where to learn it
Article Abstract:
The Graphics Arts Institute (GAI) in San Francisco prepares workers for the prepress industry, but it does so with a heavy emphasis on electronic publishing and computer-assisted techniques. Though traditional methods of printing are still taught, those methods are integrated into a curriculum that realizes the important role computers play in today's printing industry. Some analysts, though, say that schools like GAI are preparing students who are very computer literate, but know little about printing. GAI hopes to quite the critics by mixing digital training with traditional training and emphasizes that prepress means getting the artwork printed, not creating the artwork itself.

Article Abstract:
A 1996 directory of 72 type foundries is presented. The new guide not only contains more foundries than last year's, but also demonstrates the increasing variety of fonts available. Each company entry discusses the kind and number of fonts offered, their platforms, formats, delivery media and prices. The directory also describes company catalogues and carefully notes those that are free. Web sites, when available, are listed along with other contact information.
