The fully equipped Ventura: seventeen new utilities make life with Ventura more convenient than ever
Article Abstract:
Seventeen of the best add-on utilities intended to supplement the functions in Xerox's Ventura Publisher PC page-makeup program are evaluated. SNA Inc's VP Toolbox ($99), the easiest and most useful program available, handles style sheet documentation, file management, and Dbase formatting. Corel Systems' Ventura Utilities Tabin ($99) preserves tab alignment when Lotus 1-2-3 tables are imported into Ventura. The Laser Edge's VP-Base ($89) creates custom Dbase programs based on sample pages designed in Ventura. VS Software's Ventura Supplement Font Pak ($169.95) supplies 51 Swiss and Dutch screen and printer fonts and is almost indispensable for users of Ventura with a LaserJet printer. Micro Publishing's Document Gallery Style Sheets program provides 58 Ventura style sheets for an economical $39.95. Twelve other programs are evaluated as well: Datatag ($129.95), Headline ($185), Linebreakr ($195), Newfont ($185), Table Manners ($99), Ventura Designer Style Sheets ($29.95 to $49.95), VP-Fonts ($79), VP-Saddle ($79), VP-Tabs ($89), VP Utility Pak ($69.95), Wysifonts ($95), and With Style ($79.95).

Tailor-made type: Publisher's Type Foundry 1.1
Article Abstract:
Zsoft's $495 upgraded font editing program, Publisher's Type Foundry 1.1, offers some improvements over the last version, but is time-consuming and has problems drawing curves that detract from the program's worth. The manual avoids giving design advice, so users must have a good amount of type knowledge, an eye for aesthetics and plenty of patience in order to reap the benefits of Type Foundry. A new Replace option positions scanned images and deletes white space around it automatically. The new version also cuts the time involved in saving a downloadable font to the Bitmap Editor, yet it takes at least 20 hours to clean up a font set of 128 characters in the Bitmap Editor and another 20 hours once a font is in the Outline Editor. Zsoft plans to release another version that addresses these shortcomings, but until then Type Foundry 1.1 is a competent solution.

The line on Byline
Article Abstract:
Ashton-Tate's Byline page makeup program is an inexpensive and easy to use program designed for short, simple business documents. Byline also requires less sophisticated hardware than other publishing packages. It is particularly suited for tables, directories, and catalogs because it can directly import Lotus 1-2-3, Symphony, and Dbase III Plus data files. The program costs $295 and runs under MS-DOS.
