The savvy shopper's guide to laser printers
Article Abstract:
Publishing results depend on printing; therefore, the choice of a printer is particularly important to a desktop publisher. Software is the most important factor to consider; first, discover which printers are compatible with the application that you intend to use. Other factors to consider include the following: Does the printer's controller include a page description language (PDL)? What other printers can a particular printer emulate? What fonts are available? How much memory does it have? How is the image made (Is the machine a 'black writer' or a 'white writer')? What sort of interface is used? How does the machine handle paper? Finally, how well does the machine do the particular work that you intend to do? A list of laser printers is included, with company names, prices and specifications.

Budget publishing
Article Abstract:
LeBaugh Software's Leprint, ranging from $175 to $375, and Softcraft's $210 Fancy Fonts are word processing programs for the PC that can print text files from any word processor in a variety of typefaces and point sizes. Both programs format by reading text-embedded codes input by the user. Leprint includes fonts for Toshiba and other printers. Both programs employ the same general methods and require a graphics display card for document preview. Once either program is installed and settings are determined, text is entered, saved and previewed for mistakes. Changes are make by re-opening the text file and adjusting codes. Both programs are worthwhile, considering their cost.
