Words under Windows: Ami Professional and Legend
Article Abstract:
Samna Corp's Ami Professional 1.1 and NBI Inc's Legend 2.0 word processing software packages run under Microsoft Windows, provide extensive page layout features and are intended to compete with Microsoft Word for Windows. Both programs cost $495, and the primary difference between the two is that Ami Professional is easy to learn and a joy to use, whereas Legend is more powerful. Ami Professional lets users create the screen format in which they wish to work, placing a box with paragraph styles and icon bar showing icons for the most used features on screen or displaying a clear screen, depending on the part of the document being worked on. The program's slow performance is its primary drawback. Legend offers more precise control over design changes and better typographical controls, but it takes longer to learn. Choosing between the two programs may depend on a particular feature required: Ami Professional's ease of use or Legend's sophisticated layout functions.

Slide rules: the do's and don'ts of crowd-pleasing slides
Article Abstract:
Several techniques help in preparation of a successful slide presentation. An initial slide should visually present the agenda for the presentation and state the conclusion. The slide should be used again at the end of the presentation. A simple, visual symbol should be created for each element of the presentation and should be used whenever that element is brought into the presentation again. The same background should be used for all the slides. Dark with light text is best. Each slide should make a single point and that point should be stated in a headline. Complex supporting data can be distributed in a handout. Simple language should be used and unnecessary decoration avoided. Images should be substituted for words whenever possible; diagrams and maps effectively show relationships. One slide should tell the audience what they are being asked to do - buy a product, reach a conclusion, or take other action.
