The French sporting goods retailer Decathlon experienced poor trading figures when its opened its first shop in the UK, in the Canada Water Retail Park, Surrey, England. The firm is known for putting on events in its stores. They plan to increase the number of stores in the UK by 5-6 units by 2003. They have already purchased the freehold of a 53,821 sq ft store in Stockport, England, for 9 million pounds sterling and are planning to lease a new 61,000 sq ft building in Nottingham, England. Decathlon owns 215 stores worldwide and had a turnover of 1.3 billion pounds sterling in 1998.

New lease of life for historic town
Article Abstract:
The historic city of Canterbury, Kent, attracts many visitors, but this brings problems such as traffic congestion. Plans are now underway to invest 65 million pounds sterling in the development of the Whitefriars area of the city. Completely new shopping space is set to replace a range of existing buildings, and more than 17,000 sq mt will be added to the available retail area in the city.
