Adapting to change
Article Abstract:
Rapid changes in technology are making it very difficult for developers of business parks in the UK to anticipate the future requirements of occupiers. Buildings must be designed at least a year before they are occupied, and technology can sometimes change a lot in that time. It is vital that developers place strong emphasis on versatility in order to ensure that buildings do not become obsolescent too quickly. However, it is also important to be aware that designing for complete flexibility can produce a building that does not meet a company's basic operational needs.

Long-term view of life
Article Abstract:
Life-cycle costing has become a popular tool for assessing the costs associated with running office buildings in the UK. This approach can be used during the initial design of a new building, and can also be applied at any point during the life of a building. It is not expensive to use, particularly when taking into account that it can bring considerable cost savings. The Dept of the Environment, Transport and the Regions is researching who is using life-cycle costing.
