E-revolution is cancelled
Article Abstract:
Internet shopping is anticipated to be worth 6.14 billion pounds sterling, at 1995 prices, by the year 2003. But it will only account for under 3% of all retail sales. Internet shopping will take trade from the increased sales which would have gone to out-of-town sites. Some high street retailers have chosen to sell goods on the Internet to challenge electronic commerce. High street retailers have also faced competition from out-of-town retail sites, with the floor space for out-of-town outlets increasing by 87% in 1981-1996. Yet town centre shops have increased trade by over 10% during 1981-1996.

Non-food retailing
Article Abstract:
It is widely assumed in the UK that out-of-town retailing presents a serious threat to high street retailing. This has prompted the development of policies that look to limit out-of-town development in order to boost the viability of town centres. However, research based on non-food shopping indicates that this approach could be having a negative impact on the UK retail sector as a whole. It was found that the strongest retail centres had relatively more out-of-town non-food retail floorspace connected with them, while the weakest centres had less.
