Industrial/distribution survey results

Article Abstract:

A survey of industrial and distribution businesses in London, England, revealed a range of reasons for locating in the area, although the proximity of Heathrow Airport was vital for a quarter of the businesses. The majority considered the M25 motorway important to their business, although 75% of this majority believe the motorway is badly congested. Twenty seven per cent of the occupiers are considering expansion during 1997, whilst 13% anticipate reducing their business occupancy.

London, England, is a major business centre offering good transport facilities, an expanding workforce, new office development and assistance for locating in some areas. The headquarters of over 20% of Europe's top 500 firms are in London, together with a quarter of the UK's largest companies. Grant assistance is available for companies locating in the Docklands area of London and in other areas of East London, including the Thames Gateway development area.

Available industrial and distribution property in London, England, amounted to 3.2 million square meters in December 1996. There has been little new development in this sector so rents have risen by around 10% in the more desirable locations. Details of rents in the prime areas are presented, together with figures of property availability in each London borough.
