Little indication of an upturn
Article Abstract:
Many retailers are still planning to add sales space, even though the growth in consumer spending remains limited. However, it seems that traders may find it hard to actually achieve their expansion plans. Demand is not likely to move from out-of-town to town centre sites as regulations regarding out-of-town development are tightened up, because town centre space is still in very short supply. Lack of appropriate High Street stock will mean that retailers are unable to expand as they would wish.

Big box retailing
Article Abstract:
A large proportion of the retail floorspace currently available in the UK does not meet modern retailing requirements. This is reflected in high vacancy rates in tertiary and poor secondary areas of many town centres. Larger trading locations are expanding at the expense of smaller ones, with this trend being reinforced by the market share increases of chain retailers. Demand for big box retail outlets is set to continue to increase as long as retailers continue to focus on volume.
