No-win situation
Article Abstract:
A consortium started by Balfour Beatty Developments is facing opposition from tenants on its site in Spitalfields, London, England. The consortium, named Spitalfields Development Group, (SDG) intended to develop the area in 1987 but the lack of interest from corporate purchasers led to SDG giving short term leases to a variety of small businesses. The LIFFE company wishes to relocate into the two new buildings that will be constructed on the site if planning is approved. The action group wants the SDG to leave the site as it is, whilst Liffe offers the possibility of 1,200 new jobs for the area.

City at the centre
Article Abstract:
Representatives set to market London, England, as a business location at the 1997 MIPIM event go with the knowledge that London maintains its pre-eminence as a European business centre. Over 100 of the top 500 European firms have their headquarters in London. The UK property market is one of the healthiest in Europe and rents in the City of London reached 35-46 pounds sterling per square foot in 1996. Advantages for businesses choosing London include both the English language and the presence of foreign-language speakers, deregulation, and a strong, cost-competitive workforce.

Taking the garden to market
Article Abstract:
The county of Kent in England has lagged behind in commercial development but a new body launched in 1996, Locate in Kent (LIK), hopes to change the county's prospects. Kent's traditional industries of coal-mining, brick-making and the docks have declined, and incoming industries have been diverse and scattered. LIK plans to co-ordinate existing initiatives and market the investment potential of Kent in Europe, the US and the Far East. Kent has an advantageous location between London and the European mainland, low costs, available space and a workforce keen to work locally.
