On the waterfront
Article Abstract:
Wales has been extremely successful in attracting inward investment. It is now home to around 380 international firms, of which more than 50 are Japanese. Wales has attracted inward investment partly as a result of a proactive policy of incentives through grants and partly because its labour force, although of high quality, is less expensive than in many other parts of the UK. It would be possible to attract even more investment if Wales were granted Objective One status.

Satisfied occupiers
Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland has become extremely successful in attracting foreign investment. It has a strong tradition in manufacturing, but has also gained a positive reputation in other areas, including information technology. Unemployment in Northern Ireland remains high compared with the rest of the UK, but this indicates that there is a statistically highly employable workforce. Average wages are relatively low, but employees are reported to be extremely loyal and reliable.
