Preparing for Trafford
Article Abstract:
A study has predicted towns in the Greater Manchester, England, area will be most effected by the opening of the Trafford Centre. The Trafford Centre will comprise of 1.3 million sq ft of retailing and leisure space. It is due to open in Sept 1997. Some observers have criticised the authorities for their lack of action in encouraging customers to use the town centres. There will not be direct competition with the Trafford Centre in some towns, as they offer a convenience style of shopping. Other towns have major stores, such as Marks and Spencer PLC, which are not moving into the new centre.

Adding spice to the mix
Article Abstract:
The introduction of leisure facilities within large retail developments, in the UK, have not been as widespread as in the US. Some UK leisure firms prefer to be located in the town centres which already provide a mix of leisure and retail outlets. Many retail centres, built in the 1980s, comprised only of eating outlets and shops. It is vital for shopping centre operators to ensure they have retail and leisure outlets which will appeal to their target customers. Some US developers are using the idea of European town centres as a concept for their Urban Entertainment Centres.

Making centres perform better
Article Abstract:
New forms of retailing such as out-of-town superstores and home shopping are becoming an increasing threat to the profitability of establish town-centre shopping centres. In many cases, managers of shopping centres have failed to fully develop their potential, and this has made the situation worse. They see the tenants as responsible for developing competitive strategies, and fail to do any more than simply collect rents.
