RDAs fill regional void
Article Abstract:
The UK Government's plans to introduce nine regional development agencies (RDAs) have had a mixed reception from concerned parties. Tarmac Kingfisher and South West Enterprise Chairman Sir John Banham would like English Partnerships (EP) to retain its national role in making sure the regions are working together. The RDAs will take over all EP projects and its funding. Some experts are concerned if the RDAs will be able to work effectively with the private sector whilst others suggest it will need additional funding. The RDAs have been awarded a total budget of 750 million pounds sterling.

Social obligation
Article Abstract:
UK housebuilders are anticipating that the government will introduce stricter regulations regarding the provision of social housing. The requirement to provide a certain element of social housing, or make a payment for off-site provision, could now apply to developments as small as 15 units. Some observers believe that planning gain in this form is no more than an additional tax on housebuilders. Many housebuilders believe that local councils are responsible for pushing up house prices, and feel that they should not be responsible for bearing the cost of social housing.
