Retailers urged to pay for town-centre facelift
Article Abstract:
A study by The Urban and Economic Development Group recommends that town centre improvements should be funded by retailers and property owners. The government supports these environmental strategies and hopes a voluntary approach to funding will succeed. It may need to become mandatory if retailers do not support it. This system is already in operation in the United States. Pilot projects are planned for Middlesbrough, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London and should be introduced in 1997.

RICS welcomes moves to simplify PFI process
Article Abstract:
The UK government's guidance on PFI projects is now a lot better than it was originally, according to the RICS. However, many surveyors are still trying to avoid PFI as far as possible, even though they are aware that private sector funding will inevitably become increasingly important, regardless of political developments. The RICS has welcomed the fact that the government recognises that greater efficiencies are required in the PFI process.
