Article Abstract:
UK house prices have ben stable during 1995, though the number of transactions and starts on new homes have declined. Housing completion were 38,100 for 1st qtr 1995, above levels for housing starts. Falls have occurred in house prices, but there are variations according to region and type of property. Economic uncertainty has affected buyers in some areas such as Edinburgh. Greater London also shows a drop in confidence with demand weakening.

The new House Price Barometer created by Halifax Building Society and 'Estates Gazette' magazine will record average values in almost 80 UK cities and towns each quarter. Research undertaken show far indicates that residential property is made up a series of local markets and sub-markets, and cannot be seen as a single entity. Prices have increased slightly over the last year, but there are strong regional variations.

The British housing market remained stable in the first three months of 1995, according to the Estates Gazette/Halifax Building Society House Price Barometer. Housing turnover has remained steady at a seasonally-adjusted roughly 102-111,000 per month. The average ratio of house prices to incomes is 3.86 at present, down from 3.96 for the first half of 1993.
