Tiger loosens its grip

Many Southeast Asian electronics companies have opened Welsh outlets to take advantage of the European market place therefore the Asian economic crisis has had a limited impact. Some new investment is going ahead, with the Taiwanese company, Acer Peripherals, intending to invest 25 million pounds sterling in a factory, in Cardiff, Wales. Halla Euro Enterprise has suffered from the devaluation of the Korean won which has resulted in the company reducing activity in its Welsh factory. LG Group's planned investment of 1.7 billion pounds sterling in Newport, Wales, will go ahead.

Land development schemes are boosting the economy of Exeter, England, by encouraging new companies to move into the area. Plans to redevelop the town centre has lead to a rise in the number of business-related leases, which have risen in price. Firms can expect to pay up to 97 pounds sterling per square metre for prime locations in Exeter city centre, with out of town rents averaging about 108 pounds sterling per square metre.
