Tug of war
Article Abstract:
Local authorities are restricting the development of new retail parks on the outskirts of towns due to changes in planning policies by the UK Government. Concern over damage to the environment by the increasing use of cars and the adverse affect on town centres when shops move out has lead to the changes. Industry observers claim that the new laws will not regenerate town centres and customers will continue to drive to developments that already exist. Councils are carefully investigating any changes made to existing developments whilst some companies plan to challenge the new laws in court.

Counter attraction
Article Abstract:
An inquiry into the development of the 26 acre Canada Fields area, North London, England, is underway to decide the type of development which should go ahead on the site. Some local agents fear that a new retail development will take trade away for the town centres of Cheshunt and Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. They point out that the Brookfield Centre has already had a negative impact on retailing in the town centres. Many shops are vacant, with rents at 15 pounds sterling per sq ft in Cheshunt. Other agents suggest that Brookfield attracts different customers to shops in the town centre.
