Vital vitamin hidden in a dull diet
Article Abstract:
The minimum amount of vitamin C needed to prevent scurvy is 10mg a day but research at Edinburgh University Cardiovascular Research Unit in Jan 1992 shows that men with low levels of vitamin C risk angina and American research in Mar 1992 shows that sperm need vitamin C for health. It can be made industrially and the Roche factory at Dairy in North Ayrshire makes 40 tons a day. Vitamin C protects cells against oxidisation which is linked to ageing, heart disease, cataracts, arthritis and cancer. The body has about 2,000mg of the vitamin and can absorb up to 500mg a day but the UK recommended dose is now 40mg. In the US it is 60mg and in Russia it is 90mg but in 1989 Balz Frei of the University of California at Berkeley recommended 150mg.

Little killers that have been around for a long time
Article Abstract:
Dioxins are produced by industrial use of chlorine, but are also present in UK soil samples dating from 1843 and in Japanese sediments over 8,000 years old. The US Environmental Protection Agency found dioxin the most carcinogenic compound, but most German workers exposed to dioxins in 1954 were still well 37 years later. Leading analyst Professor Christoffer Rappe of the University of Umea in Sweden found only 17 dioxins of 210 toxic.

What lurks within that nasty niff
Article Abstract:
The European Odour Standards will publish guidelines on smelly molecules in the air in Mar 1993. Methyl mercaptan, which causes bad breath and smelly socks, will be included. It is produced naturally from bacteria in the environment and is a by-product of insecticide manufacturing. It is used in pesticides, particularly weedkillers or cereal crops.
