GPA chooses poor take-off time
Article Abstract:
GPA Group, based in Shannon, the Republic of Ireland, owns 415 aeroplanes which it leases to 100 airlines and will be floated on the stock market in June 1992. It spent $1.3bn, 726 million pounds sterling, in 1990-1991 and made $262 million. In 1991-1992 profits were $267 million despite the Gulf war, airline collapses and world recession. It has high borrowings and used innovative financing to place its planes. The share issue values it at $2.5 billion. This should raise $500-$750 million for the company, which has contracts for plane purchases of $12 billion by 2000.

Bringing science into the City
Article Abstract:
Quantitative analysts (quants) use computer produced statistics in fund management, ignoring products and news. Passive quants design indexed portfolios and active quants try to outperform the index. A further refinement is used at Hill Samuel Investment Management where long-lasting investment trends are exploited using computer predictions rather than subjective judgement.County NatWest uses neural networks to validate investment trends on the continent.
