The timetable now heading for delay
Article Abstract:
European monetary union (EMU) is currently due to come into effect on Jan 01, 1999, but it is looking increasingly likely that this will now be delayed. Germany has recently tightened up its conditions for EMU, and this will probably mean that some countries will not be eligible to join by 1999. The current deadline has imposed a timetable which has already begun operating, which is why there is so much discussion about meeting qualifying criteria already.

Jaws of tax trap close on bickering Tories
Article Abstract:
The UK government must now consider how to balance tax receipts which are lower than was anticipated against public spending which is also certain to be higher than anticipated. It appears that the only way to resolve this problem is to abandon its commitment to returning to a balanced budget as soon as possible. The government has failed in practice to curb real spending growth, and can no longer disguise its failings in this area.
