A growing regional powerhouse
Article Abstract:
It can be argued that Malaysia has the best growth prospects in the whole of south-east Asia. It has seen average growth rate of 6.5% a year since the early 1970s, and inflation is expected to fall to less than 3% in 1998, from an average of 3.5%. Malaysian businessmen have been establishing a presence in African, Asian and South American markets, and it does not appear that Malaysia will face the challenges which have hampered economic growth in Thailand, such as rising wage demands in industries where large workforces are required.

Saving for the future
Article Abstract:
The Botswanan economy has grown strongly since the country gained its independence in 1966, and it now has one of the highest foreign exchange reserves in the world. However, the government is keenly aware of the need to carefully manage fiscal policy, as the demands of health, education and infrastructure development will place great strain on the economy in the period to 2004. The International Monetary Fund has considerable influence in Botswana, even though the country has never borrowed from this source.

Man with 2020 vision
Article Abstract:
The economy of Malaysia has expanded rapidly under the influence of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Indeed, he is regarded by some observers as the most powerful and influential person in Asia after Chinese President Jiang Zemin. There has been speculation that he may be facing health problems, but there are no signs that he is losing power. He is widely seen as a visionary, and has been responsible for some extremely innovative projects.
