The grave danger of turning rape into a racial issue
Article Abstract:
A Channel 4 'Dispatches' documentary by Laurel Productions that suggests that gang rape has become an element of black teenage male culture raises some controversial issues. In particular, this documentary seems to make rape a racial issue. The production team reports that it could not find similar crimes being undertaken by groups of young white men. If this is the case, then a number of questions should be raised, including whether cases involving young white men are being treated as a criminal matter at all. It is important to be aware that the police and courts are not a reliable source of evidence in the case of crimes involving black men.

A sporting chance for volunteers
Article Abstract:
The voluntary sector in the UK is a powerful counterweight to the public and private sectors. Charities represent around 3% of the country's GDP and employ around 450,000 people, or 2% of the total workforce. They also control a great deal of money. This is a positive thing, as it means that power is removed from national government and the influence of party politics on key areas of policy is diminished. It is now time for the government to recognize the importance of voluntary work, possibly giving tax breaks to companies which allow their employees to take time off for voluntary work.
