A-hunting we will go
Article Abstract:
British sporting paintings of hunts and racehorses record four centuries of history but are unpopular with collectors and national galleries. The most important sporting artists are Herring (father and son,) Ferneley, Marshall, Stubbs and Agasse. Sotheby's holds the only US sale. Sporting picture dealers Ackermann closed in 1991. Prices have fallen by a third since 1988-89. In Feb and Mar 1993 more American and continental purchases of sporting paintings have taken place.

Bone up on the chain saw market
Article Abstract:
Medical instruments are attracting growing interest from collectors and investors in the UK. There is particular interest in decorative items and those which are associated with sensational events of the past. Prices are rising rapidly, and it is now hard to purchase certain items at reasonable rates. However, it is rare for prices to be inflated by competitive bidding between medical collectors and those who collect glass, porcelain, silver or antiquities.

Stop press! Art market says size does matter
Article Abstract:
Bonhams auctioneer held a week-long selling exhibition of new graduate art instead of the usual auctions. Consultant Nicholas Usherwood regularly visits 25 art schools but sales at auction fell from 66% to 39% from 1990 to 1992. The recession has created a more conservative taste for art. Prospective purchasers prefer larger paintings to show off. Peter Kennelly and Mark Francis are successful artists who began selling at Bonhams auctions.
