A pilgrimage to the wrong shrine
Article Abstract:
UK Conservative party leader William Hague will visit the US in order to obtain some ideas about compassionate conservatism from Republicans there. In doing so, he has indicated that he remains firmly attached to his Thatcherite roots, with the message of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher having been taken from American conservatism of the late 1970s and the 1980s. However, the Republicans are currently performing very badly. Like the Conservatives in the UK, the Republicans have been guilty of listening only to those who share their views.

An elephantine struggle
Article Abstract:
The US Republican party is currently facing severe difficulties following a time during which it seemed to be becoming more powerful. Senator Bob Dole, the party's presidential candidate, is trailing badly in the opinion polls, and Newt Gingrich, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen from popularity. Some observers feel that the Republican party faces the possibility of being split in too, especially if it experiences a humiliating defeat in the presidential election in Nov 1996.

Looking down the barrel of a gun
Article Abstract:
Colt Industries has announced that it will stop making handguns for the commercial market. This is because it can no longer afford the cost of defending lawsuits filed by its weapons' victims and their families. Very limited progress has been made in the US towards imposing a ban on guns, as politicians fear the powerful National Rifle Association. It would be ironic if the fear of litigation were to finally place restrictions on guns.
