Article Abstract:
The future of the hotels in the Savoy Group remains uncertain as Trusthouse Forte prepares to sell off this operation in order to fight off a hostile takeover bid from Granada. It is possible that they will be taken over by a leading US hotel chain, such as Sheraton or Marriott. At present, the actual control of the hotels is in the hands of the Wontner family trust, but surviving family members could decide to sell out too. The hotels have been facing strong competition recently, and occupancy rates are now only around 65%, compared with rates approaching 90% for some rivals.

Midnight's children stay silent
Article Abstract:
There seems to be very little enthusiasm among ordinary Indians for marking the 50th anniversary of the country's independence. Indeed, even the country's politicians are dismissive of the idea that country-wide celebrations should be held. This could partly be because Congress, the party which brought about independence, is out of power and divided, and partly because few Indians wish to draw attention to the fact that the country was under foreign control until so recently.

Time for a little daylight - and sanity
Article Abstract:
Moves to reform Greenwich Mean Time would mean that winter mornings in the UK would be darker for longer, but afternoons would become lighter. Opponents of this move claim that extra darkness in the mornings could lead to more accidents, but there is generally strong public support for the measure. Putting the clocks forward an hour in winter and an extra hour in summer would actually give 12% more time for activities which rely on daylight.
